Meera, who graduated from the Media Production course in 2015, produced her documentary as part of her final year studies. Travelling to India with support from the universities Centre for Global Engagement, she documented the lives of transgender people, the difficulties they faced being transgender in a relatively traditional culture and the manner in which they have joined together with other transgender people in support networks. The resulting documentary received one of the highest marks ever awarded to a final-year student for their final major project.

Speaking on her Transindia facebook page, Meera says:
“I am overwhelmed with the award and so grateful!! Thank you so much to my family’s support here and in India for believing in me and helping to make this film. Of course, a massive mention to the Hijra community for sharing their inspiring and moving stories.”

Ken Fero, Senior Lecturer in Documentary Production notes:
“Meera showed a determination to produce documentaries from the very first days on the BA in Media Production and over her three years here has displayed creativity, professionalism and bravery in her choice of subjects and her visual approach. She has been consistent in her ability to show passion in her filmmaking and the skill and humility to engage in challenging stories leading to well deserved results.”

Meera is currently undertaking an MA in 21st Century Media Practice here at Coventry University.
