On Tuesday, 27 January, Media & Communications lecturer Dr. Gemma Commane delivered a keynote speech at the Office of National Statistics’ annual conference in Cardiff. Her paper discussed the value of ethnography in re-presenting agency, voice and complexity when researching sexed-spaces.

Commane’s research has covered subcultures, youth and deviancy, fetish and BDSM clubbing cultures, LGBTQ identities, sexuality, burlesque striptease, body modification, alternative femininities and ethnography. She is currently researching emotions in the research process and researcher positionality, sexual flexibility beyond ‘deviancy,’ and subversive bodily praxis in burlesque striptease.
