Well, that’s one way to get good reception – film in Reception.
A new portable TriCaster mixing desk means Journalism students can set up a studio pretty well anywhere – including the lobby in the Ellen Terry building at Coventry University.
Only five weeks into the autumn term, and second-years were already producing their first TV show, recorded in one take in front of a live audience. It features pieces on Coventry’s bid to become European City of Culture, a Halloween make-up tutorial, and a tour of rarely-seen parts of the lakeside at Coombe Abbey park.
Here’s how the day unfolded, in pictures:
Beck helps set up the tripods
Having a laugh is part of the process
All good media careers have to start somewhere
Will that piece be ready in time?
The running order’s looking healthy
Beck gives a new meaning to the term, “floor manager”
You’re not looking fierce enough, Aaron
Ben and Ben discuss the shots; Natalia eyes up that coffee
Tashanne pre-records her City of Culture interview
Lecturer Sarah edits the title sequence…
…which features shots of the team at work
Important note: don’t forget to eat!
The running order is attached to each tripod
Beck and Jess get that shot lined up
Everyone ready? We’re about to go live
On the sofa: presenters Ben and Adonelle, with newsreader Alpha
Is than an autocue, or a nought-o-cue? Visual talkback – on legs!
Editor Cameron (left) and tutor Ben watch the directors calling the shots on the mixing desk (set up in a cupboard just off reception)
Directing means making decisions under pressure – but it’s a buzz
Reporter Ieuan went back to nature (and did a “walk and talk”)…
… and Vasile went to the pictures
Did something embarrassing happen? Adonelle’s reading that script VERY closely
Kinga’s Halloween make-up piece plays while the live team prepares the next item
Coming to you in five, four, three… Natalia relays director Josh’s instructions
The mummification game is mad. Stronger toilet rolls needed next time, maybe
The view from above
An audience of passers-by builds up in the lobby
Jerome and Karena keep busy on social media throughout the show
Yasmin’s on Camera One… Gemma’s on two cameras
Good job, team! Now just three more episodes to go…
