It wasn’t just similarity in names that made Laetitia Motema chose Letitia George as the ideal interviewee for her Journalism degree project at Coventry. But it helped to break the ice with the contestant on TV’s The Voice.
“There was a connection,” says Laetitia. “I said to her it was a bit awkward because I don’t have any friends with the same name. But the interview went well because we shared that.”
Letitia knew she wanted the singing bar manager for her first music interview – part of her final degree project – as soon as she saw her on The Voice.
“She’s was the opening act and she’s from Coventry, which caught my attention.”
The interview, in the TV studio at Coventry University, went well. “She was full of energy,” says Laetitia. “She was always excited, and she was very funny. We talked seriously but we had a laugh as well.”
Laetitia sees her studies as a way of getting into music journalism. She also took a year out to study in Madrid.
“It’s giving me an opportunity to do what I want to do in my future career,” she says. “But I also work part-time for a radio station in London, Love 316.”
She runs the station’s social media, pulling together news bites about music, and presents a show called The Weekend Drive, about upcoming events. But the station has plans to expand.
“They are looking to start a TV station so I said to myself, I can start something here in Coventry: I’ve got the equipment, I’ve got the editing software, I’m going to start doing it now so by the time I graduate I’ve got a portfolio.
“I’m starting an MTV Coventry, starting with Letitia.”
